Chapala is quarried from a bedrock quarry in Mexico. This travertine is produced for Arizona Tile utilizing the full range of production. This means that everything being produced from the block is packed in the crate. Due to this process, there can be noticeable variances between pieces, including color range and fill hole size, so it is important and recommended that a range of this product be viewed before finalizing a purchase. All travertine stones will have natural cavities, or pits, visible in the stone that were developed when carbon dioxide bubbles became trapped during the formation of the stone. Three days prior to honing, this travertine is filled with a colored cement to fill in these cavities. During the dry summer months the cement will cure more quickly than it will during the more humid parts of the year. Because of this fluctuation in curing, it is normal for the tone of the fill to differ between seasons.
